Building a sidewalk…2 questions:?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I have a fairly large yard that is not fenced. However before I built my house and moved in the yard was just a pile of trash. I am working on cleaning it up very slowly and at baby steps. I want a garden and flowers, but can’t right now because I don’t have a fence to keep deer away.

Anyway, my driveway is just dirt and gravel and ends where the grass starts. I would like to build a walkway from the end of the driveway to the front steps and a pathway that would break off and go to the side door. What time of things do I need other than concrete mix to accomplish this and what are the steps.

Also, I’m not to the point of building a deck or porch yet, but would like to have a sitting area out ide with patio chairs and tables but don’t want it to be in a pile of grass where I will have bugs crawling all over me. I was thinking of buying some of those large walkway stones to make an area that is at least big enough for a porch swing, hammock, or two sitting chairs and a grill. When I put these stones down, do I just arrange them and place them or do I need to dig a little bit and set them IN the ground? Will they stay put or shift as I move furniture around on it? Any tips?

Your best bet for both the walk and pathway would be patio stones which you can lay yourself. These come in a variety of sizes and colors. All you need to do is remove the turf and dig out about 2" to 3" of soil, add some crushed rock, and level it out. Place your patio stones on top, making sure they are level. This should do very nicely for the amount of traffic you’ll have. Don’t worry about moving furniture, the stones won’t move once they have settled in.

What would be an appropriate monetary gift for the girl who is handling my reception?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

When I started planning my wedding I found out that my cousin has a wife who bakes wedding cakes. I don’t know either of them very well, but I called and talked to her. We met and talked about what I wanted and she has agreed to help with my simple cake, punch, nuts and mints reception. (No catered dinner) She will actually be taking care of almost everything, making the cake and the punch and homemade mints. I asked her what she thought it would cost and she has told me to just plan on paying her back for the supplies. She says that she does receptions for friends and relatives just because she likes to. When we finished making our plans, her husband (my cousin) asked who was going to be doing my flowers. I told him that I hadn’t decided that yet and they told me that she also does silk flower arrangements.
So I bought the supplies and she has put together the bridal and maid of honor bouquets, coursages for the females involved in the wedding and mothers and boutoniers for the men. (We aren’t using any large arrangements.) Again, she told me that as long as I bought the supplies, she was not charging for the flower arranging.
She has taken a lot of stress off of me by taking care of the reception and flowers and saved me a lot of money. However, I don’t feel right about just paying for the supplies. I would like to give her an additional monetary gift because I know she is taking a lot of time and effort on my behalf (someone she barely knows, but is related to) I think she is even taking the day of my wedding off from work to bake the cake.
I don’t know her well enough to get a gift card or gift certificate that would be appropriate. Any suggestions on what might be an appropriate amount?

at least $250

flower arranging medium?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

what is the stuff called that can be used to arrange artificial flowers. It looks clear, like water, but dries to a solid.
Know where I can get it?

Yes, craft stores that carry artificial flowers can help you; you could call around to save a trip and see what they can tell you.

Is it true that Donald Trump is doing a "Charm School" type show?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Late last night I could have sworn that on The Soup they said that Trump was going to do, yet another, rip off show of Ladette To Lady. I don’t know if Joel McHale was joking around or if it’s a real show in the making.

FYI, Ladette To Lady is a British show that airs on the Sundance channel in the US and is already going into it’s 3rd season. It takes place at a REAL finishing school with REAL teachers and REAL finishing school classes (e.g. flower arranging, cooking, sewing, elocution, etiquette, public speaking, etc.).

P.S. If Trump IS doing a copycat show, I’m totally watching it. LOL! I’m only human.
That’s it! Lady or a Tramp. Trying to think of the tentative title has been driving me nuts! Thanks!

He is currently in talks and planning with Fox for a show, tentatively called "Lady or a Tramp," which will take party girls and send them through a crash charm school course.
