Help with flowers… centerpieces vs decorations?

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I am doing a budget wedding. In my package, centerpieces are included so we picked out beautiful blue glass vases (blue is our color) with fresh spider mums and bells of ireland.
Because other flowers are NOT included, we are going to be using silk flowers for bouquets and corsages.
Here is my question- in my home I have a variety of beautiful vases in the same blue glass, just as decorations in my living room. Do you think it would look pretty to have them around as other decorations? As in, on the present table and place-card table, etc?
I love this idea, the problem is that the vases from home wouldn’t have the same flower arrangements as the centerpieces, I would have to either do silk flowers or stop at a grocery store and pick up flowers the day of, and there is no way to mimic spider mums either way.

Also, if I go with this idea, how do I make sure guests don’t take them home? I’ve heard that usually guests try to take the centerpieces, which is fine. I just don’t want to lose my personal decorations.
… like I said above, the centerpieces are already ordered. Those are set in stone.

I think the cons outweigh the pros.

You have to spend more money for the flowers, and if you are on a budget this is money that could be better spent elsewhere. Plus you have to worry about buying the flowers on that day and making sure the vases go home with you.

If you decide to do this, just put two or three vases on the placecard table and one in each bathroom. Not on the gifts table or elsewhere.

where can i buy gerbera daisies?

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

I am trying to figure out for my wedding (10.02.10) where I can buy Gerbera daisies. I do not want a bouquet or arrangement. I am wanting to buy single daisies because my "center pieces" are going to be mason jars with ribbon tied on and 3 daisies (orange, yellow and white) in the jars. Sometthing simple for the picnic themed wedding I want to have. But, everywhere I look they just have bouquets and what not. I’ve thought of silk flowers but I would love to have the real thing.

I used these guys for my wedding. I got roses and they were beyond perfect, if that’s at all possible.

They delivered to my door (UPS) on Thursday, I made the arrangements Friday (roses need a day to open fully) and the wedding was Saturday.

I’m doing my own flowers, need advice…?

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

We are on a strict budget for our wedding and based on the quotes I’ve been told, we can’t afford a florist. A friend of my Mother told us that we should buy real flowers in bulk online and just do the arrangements ourselves. (that’s what they did at her daughters wedding) I love the idea, especially since we aren’t doing that many decorations. My fiancee is afraid real flowers will be too much work since we have to care for them overnight. My question is, for those who did their own flowers, how do I know how much to order? Whether I go with silk or real I don’t want to overbuy. I do have a floral book that I’m getting ideas from. Also, If it ends up being easier can I mixed silk flowers with real, or is that tacky? The bouquets and stuff will be real. Any advice would be a great help!
well, our budget is $5,000 but we will spend most of it on three primary things, Picures, honey moon and my dress and accessories (which totaled $900 after taxes) Little stuff here and there is eating the budget to pieces. Some people told us that we HAVE to spend more for a decent wedding but $5,000 is almost too much for us. Anyways, the average cost of the flowers we would like to have is $300 or less. We were told to cover our wedding party and mothers and fathers we will have to spend about $500 and that’s not including any decorations.

I only wish I had $5000 to spend on MY wedding! I’m planning an outdoor wedding for May ‘07 and have done all my own florals with silks. I wouldn’t mix fresh and silks either. Doing your own isn’t that hard and will save you alot in the end. I bought my silks from several different places, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Dollar General and Dollar Tree. Hobby Lobby will usually have their stems on sale one week and their bunches on sale the next, both at half price. They have some beautiful silks to choose from. If you choose to buy on an off week then they always have a coupon you can use to save 40%. I bought my bouquet holder from Hobby Lobby on a week when they had all their wedding stuff for half off. Choose whatever florals you want to use and all you have to do is cut them and begin placing them in the styrofoam holder, then when you’re satisfied with the look, finish it off by wrapping coordinating ribbons around the handle and then looping them thru the hole on the end to have some hanging off. You can go to multiple websites online and print off step by step directions on how to do your own, just do a search on how to.
I also made all the corsages and boutineers too, plus decorations to use thruout the wedding. I’m also decorating an arbor with tulle, red heart lights and silk garlands that will coordinate with my bridal flowers.
If I can do it, anyone can! Just have a hot glue gun, wire cutters, some wire, floral tape and a little confidence in yourself!!
Best wishes for beautiful flowers and a happy life!

coursage question….?

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

I have the assignment of getting the coursages for a wedding.
2 mothers and 1 grandmother.
Their colors are silver and coral what would YOU get?
since we are on the ground floor of planning ANY help would be great!!
type of flowers silk I think…arrangement???
put on your most creative and feminine "hat" .
Its a wedding of 150 ppl
we have 2 mos!!ready…..GO !!!!!!
and is the grandmother more reviered then the MOTB and the MOTG?
Thanks so much for helping me …I am sooo the wrong person for this job !!!
you are right CH4 !!
How can I get flowers if I don’t know that color they are wearing! Lacy’s colors ARE silver and Coral …but I dont know what the heck the other side of the family will wear they could be wearing matching Jackie Kennedy" Black checkered suits and pillbox hats" for all I know! I do not have enough information to pose this question yet lol Thanks all.

They should "blend" with the other flowers for the wedding.
You could go with just about any flower that is coral/peachy or use white. I would make the 3 slightly different. It would help if we knew what color the dresses are going to be.
YOU CAN DO THIS! You are amazing. You change people’s lives. You can do this little thing – NO PROBLEM.

Can I get a flower critique?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Since I am on a tight budget, I am using silks and arranging them myself. We are renting a rather large wedding pole tent and the lighting will be dimmer than in the picture. I just wanted to see if I could get a helpful critique from the fantastic "wedding" community! Am I off to a good start? I obviously haven’t done the final "tweaking" but I have 3 height variations that I am using and I have made one of each so far. (28", 20" & 8.5")
My colors are peach, pink, yellow and white. Also, I noticed that I forgot to tuck the mini-light strand battery box underneath the ivy for the picture. Once buried in ivy, it is completely hidden.)
If you can offer any helpful suggestions, I would appreciate it. I have never done flower arrangements before, so I need some insightful tips! Or if they look okay so far, I appreciate knowing that too.
If you plan to completely bash them-don’t bother…move on to another question.

Did I mention that they are centerpieces? Nope..I didn’t! Each one will be on it’s own table and I will have 4 tall 4 medium and 8 short. (So everyone can see, but I will still have height to break up the white space in the tent.)
I appreciate all of the answers so far! Thank you all SO much!
~As to the large amount of greenery-I plan to recycle these and I live in a log home, so I can reuse the ivy, but the roses just don’t fit in with my decor! I can add more flowers since I’ve only spent a little less than $15.00 per centerpiece so far!
Thanks SO much for all of your opinions!

Yes, they’re pretty. Good work. My personal opinion would cause me to suggest that you use a white candle or a yellow one if it’s going to be next to a pink flower, unless you can match the colors of the flower and the candle exactly. I don’t think the peach and pink do well next to one another when they aren’t the same item. Peach flowers next to pink ones look just fine, truly. With the candle, it doesn’t carry over for some reason. I’m not even quite sure why; it just looks a little mismatched. Honestly, using all white candles would be simplest, because they could then be placed with any of the colored flowers. They would also glow nicely, if the lighting is going to be dim. I think you have good ideas for how to make things nice on a budget. Keep up the good work. Congrats on your upcoming wedding.
