The meaning please -?

What does this sentence mean? "Wendy said, "I was perfectly happy, sitting here. Gave me a chance to do the hospital-volunteer transport rota. How are you?"
Who gave her the chance. What does she have to do for the hospital? Transporting flower arranging stuff?

"There was a car in the back drive, an estate car with a jumble of flower-arranging paraphernalia in the back. A middle aged woman was sitting in the driver’s seat, taking notes. Laura said, "Wendy."

Wendy said, "I was perfectly happy, sitting here. Gave me a chance to do the hospital-volunteer transport rota. How are you?"

apparently she is saying that she was OK with not doing anything because it gave her the free time to fill out the transport schedule for hospital volunteers.
