Do you know anyone who used a Costco sheet cake as a wedding cake?

We eat these often for office parties and birthdays. They taste pretty good, and they’re inexpensive. I was just curious whether a thrifty and creative bride has taken the next step and used these for a wedding. I bet if you arranged them on tiers or columns, added fresh flowers and a cake topper, you could do something interesting and bargain-riffic.

That’s what my fiance and I are doing. We are actually having a real wedding cake though, but it will be made of styrofoam. The only tier we have that will be real is the first 2, one to cut for at the reception, and one for our 1 year anniversary. The cake I want is a 5 tier cake, so it will be saving us loads of money(we chose to have this because we aren’t really big cake fans.) We’ll be serving sheet cakes in the back. I couldn’t imagine not having a real wedding cake though…

I think the idea is great.

I’m planning on going to a phenomenal bakery and having them do my cake but I want a sheet cake to supplement the one that is going to be photographed.

Why waste all that money on a gigantic multi-tiered cake that is only going to get eaten and leftovers thrown away? The larger, taller and more tiers you add the more the price goes up. So I’m going to do something to cut the costs.

Either a small 2-tier cake supplemented by a sheet cake or small cakes on a stand to appear tiered and supplement that with a sheet cake.

And since Costco cakes taste great, I think its a wonderful idea!!

I have seen them used as the cake that is passed out to the guests.

The wedding cake was three tiered, but only one was really cake (enough to do the "cutting of the cake"). Then, costco sheet cake was brought out of the kitchen already plated for the guests. If I hadn’t been helping run the wedding, I never would have known.

I have seen this done with fresh flowers and personal touches. Just because its inexpensive doesn’t make it cheesy because the cake and icing is pretty much the same as the fancy bakerys. The cake is symbolic. it doesn’t have to be expensive. go for it

A friend actually did that. They had a small cake that they used for the ceremonial cutting. And then just had a huge sheet cake for the rest of the guests. The bride actually said it was one of her favorite types of cakes. That’s why they chose it.

Sounds perfect on a budget, and I agree Costco cakes taste great and they can probably decorate one quite nicely for you as well! Go for it.

We had a sheet cake from Safeway as our wedding cake – no tiers, no columns, just a 1/2 sheet cake with blue roses. I guess what kind of cake to get would depend on the formality of the rest of the wedding – we got married at an outdoor event where people were camping in tents, so the wedding was informal, and so was the cake. A tiered wedding cake would have looked ridiculous given our situation.

I would say it would depend on the type of wedding you are having. If it’s really fancy…I would say skip it. But if it’s an average wedding…I don’t see the problem with it. You can also get a beautiful wedding cake done at your local grocery store. You don’t have to get a huge one…just one to put on display and do the cake cutting. You can then have the Costco cake in the back to be served to your guests. And I will bet it will be the best wedding cake anyone every had. Costco cakes are the best!!!!
    Good luck and congratulations!

I don’t see anything wrong with this…most of the weddings I’ve been to, noone eats the cake anyway.
